Can Real-Time Strategy Actually Work on a Phone?
Real-time strategy and touchscreens sound like a bad marriage. RTS wants precise clicks and quick unit selection; phones give you fat fingers and a small screen. So I went into Ironline Command expecting frustration.
What surprised me was how much good interface design solves. Drag-select boxes, pinned control groups, and generous tap targets go a long way. It's not mouse-level precise, but it's playable — even in tense moments.
The bigger adaptation the genre makes on mobile is pace. Battles are slightly slower than PC RTS, giving you time to issue commands without the game feeling sluggish. That tradeoff mostly works.
Where it still struggles is huge armies. Once you're managing dozens of units at once, the screen gets crowded and micro suffers. Skilled players will feel the ceiling.
Still, for anyone who misses the genre, it scratches the itch on a device that fits in your pocket. That's more than I expected going in.
